Is a foster home where you live before you get adopted or is it the home you go to after being adopted?

A foster home can be one of many things. It is never after adoption however. Children can be placed in foster care temporarily. This can be because of neglect, abandonment, abuse, or just because the parent is sick. This temporary placement can be by court order or they can be placed in a home until they go to court.

The foster home can also be a temporary placement with parents that intend to adopt the child. This can be a placement that is just waiting for the adoption to finalize, or waiting until the child is cleared for adoption. An example of this is when a child is abandoned and cannot be adopted until a certain number of month have gone by.

A foster home can also be a permanent placement. This may happen if the child is old enough to refuse adoption, but is permanently placed in a home. They remain in the home until they age out. I have one foster child (now aged out) who refused adoption because he was placed with us at 15 and knew that financial aid for college is better for wards of the state.

Finally, a child may be placed in a foster home because they are “hard to place”. In other words, the child is eligible for adoption but the county cannot find any adoptive parents.

The key thing about the foster home is that the child is technically in the custody of the state (or county). When a child is adopted they are in the custody of the new parents. The child’s birth certificate is reissued with the adopted parents name on it. (Two of my kids were born in states that neither me nor my wife have ever been to. We are still listed as the parents on their birth certificates.)

Before you get adopted- actually it is just a temporary home. Sometimes children will stay there untill their parents fufill requirements for their return.
