Does New York Life Insurance make its agents bug all your friends/family for life insurance?

I have interviewed with New York Life, I really like the partner with whom I would be working for but he never gives me a straight answer on how we get leads, or where our clients come from. He gave me a notebook to fill out the names and phone numbers of all my friends to bring back for my 3rd interview. Any help would be appreciated.
how else do you find leads, can you do direct mailings? does that work?

It sounds just like Primerica. They take your leads and sell to your friends and family and leave you with nothing.

You should be asking your partner if he can provide you with leads to help you get started. If he doesn’t , I would move on. Call around some other companies and ask them how to get contracted with them and how they help you get started.

You can buy leads but personally I think they are a waste of money. There is nothing like meeting people in person.

Your partner should be helping you. If he’s not, then you need to move on.

They don’t make you bug frineds and family, but they don’t give you any leads, either. You have to find your own. Friends and family are just EASIEST.

Yup. You are going to have to call everyone you know and have them come into your office and pitch a policy to them. Your “partner” will be in the room with you to try and close the deal. Why? Because you are not on commission yet and your “partner” will collect the whole commission for himself. So if after a couple of months if you do not work out, they don’t care because they have all of your friends money.

If you do work out, after you have exhausted your list of friends and relatives, you will be issued a phone book from which the rest of your leads will come from.

You may be shown training films where you are taught how to “burrow” and “nest” inside social organizations that you join for this purpose. Like churches, charitable organizations, or clubs. It is easier to sell a policy to a fellow church member. They trust you. You wouldn’t cheat a member of your church? Would you?

Soon you will begin to see every relationship as a means to sell a policy. Your good friends who have no money, now suddenly feel of no value to you. You tend to seek out people who have a highly disposable income regardless of their personality. You have changed. You are now someone else.

You are getting the answer. Yes, they will expect you to bug your neighbors family and friends for insurance. 1 in 100 life insurance agents make it 5 years.

I had so much family already in the business that it was not likely for me to get sales from them. I prospected people who bought or refinanced homes (mortgage life insurance,) new parents and newly weds. This was in the old days when you could cold call without having to worry about the do not call registry.

Small business owners need life insurance too, you can pretty much go door to door looking for them. People who get insurance bennies at work are tougher (although they can be taken away, or their job can go.)

    Good Luck!

The notebook should answer your question. It sounds like they haven’t changed their marketing in that office since mid-last century. If you want to make a living in this business you’ll need a marketing stategy.

They don’t care because they’ll make money as you sell your friends and when your pool dries up they’ll hire someone else to do the same.

I’m not sure about New York Life, but I’ve heard of many other life insurance companies who make you do this, they want you to hound and bug anyone you know into getting whole life policies.
